Flagger hit by truck, driver flees

ST. GEORGE – Police were searching on Tuesday for a red pickup truck that struck a flagger on a construction site, then fled after the driver turned around and paused to look at the injured woman.

The flagger, Heather Cudworth, 28, of Brunswick is believed to have suffered a broken leg. She was treated, then released Tuesday afternoon from Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Trooper Stephen Hills said the incident was reported at 11:26 a.m. Tuesday.

The Bangor-based Sargent Corp. construction company was doing waterline work on Marshall Point Road and had closed the road to all but local traffic, Hills said.

A sign indicating that the road was closed blocked entrance from Factory Road, Hills said, and Cudworth stood guard there, holding a stop sign. Cudworth works for P&E Safety of Brunswick, a business used by Sargent for flagging services on its road work.

According to information gathered from Cudworth, a red Chevrolet S-10 pickup with Massachusetts plates turned onto Marshall Point Road, striking Cudworth on the leg and also hitting the sign.

The driver of the truck proceeded past Cudworth, turned around, drove back to the scene of the accident, paused to look down at the woman, then drove off on Factory Road.

Hills said she described the driver as being about 40 with dark brown hair and wearing a green T-shirt.

Troopers, deputies from the Knox County Sheriff’s Department, wardens and Maine Marine Patrol officers converged on the area, Hills said, but none was able to locate the vehicle. Police suspect it may now be hidden in a garage or behind a house.

Anyone with information about the truck and driver is asked to contact state police at 1-800-452-4664. The vehicle may have damage to its passenger side front area, Hills said.
