PAUL BUNYAN MARATHON COURSE

Both the 26.2-mile marathon and 15-km race start at the corner of Main and Buck streets outside the Bangor Daily News.

The course continues downtown on Main Street and takes a right at the lights onto Railroad Street and left onto Summer Street. Runners continue onto Washington Street, turn left onto Exchange Street, and continue up Harlow Street to Valley Avenue.

The two-mile mark comes up on Valley Avenue and runners continue straight up to merge onto Kenduskeag Avenue all the way to the intersection of Kenduskeag and the Strickland Road. Runners turn right onto Strickland, hit the four-mile mark, and continue until it becomes the Burleigh Road.

The marathon pack will veer left onto Essex Street, but the 15K runners will bear right on Essex (see 15K below). ***

Marathoners will go past the six- and eight-mile marks into Orono and continue to the intersection of Essex and Orono’s Forest Avenue. A right onto Forest brings runners to the 10-, 12-, and 14-mile marks before the course makes a sharp left.

Marathoners will be on the Bennoch Road, cross the 16-mile mark and right onto Stillwater Avenue. A half-mile later, they will turn right onto Route 2 in Orono and follow it south past the 18-mile mark, the intersection with Park Street, and six more miles in as it also becomes State Street in Bangor.

A right up Summit Avenue will make a killer uphill haul for the runners after putting 25 miles behind them, but after that, a quick left onto Garland Street signals the end of the run as they make a right at the entrance to the Cohen School, run into Cameron Stadium, make another right onto the track, and run halfway around to the facility’s finish line.

*** 15K: After bearing right and remaining on Essex Street, 15K runners will follow Essex for another four miles to the intersection of Essex and Garland and turn left onto Garland, a quick right onto (Bangor’s) Forest Avenue, another quick turn onto Coombs Street, another quick left onto Parkview, and then right back onto Garland to the Cameron Stadium finish.
