Back to ‘We the people’

What has happened to “We the people”? Greed, lying, what’s best for me and to heck with you and the country have become the order of the day. It starts from the highest up and extends all the way to the downtrodden. It does not matter if the consequences affect a person, our environment, a town, a country or the world.

A few examples: pork-barrel politics that federally funded an airport that never sees air traffic; the Big Dig in Boston; the misuse of government aid and private donations for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Closer to home is the mysterious lengthening of Route 9 from Baileyville to Calais; the push to build yet another international bridge within Calais city limits at a location that is environmentally disastrous and that will cost the taxpayers tens of millions of dollars more than it would cost to build the bridge elsewhere.

More than 10 families will be displaced in order to build a bridge in Calais without having a permit to build it. There are plans to build a four-lane east-west highway despite the denial to widen a two-lane roadbed lying in the path of the planned four-lane east-west highway. Let’s go back to “For God, for country and for all the people” before it’s too late.
