Police intervene as man tries to hang self

Bangor police Officer Larry Morrill restrained a Bangor man around 2:30 p.m. Sunday who was threatening to hang himself from the footbridge in Bangor’s Pickering Square.

The man, who is in his early 20s, called dispatch to request help, and was reportedly sitting on the bridge railing with a rope tied around his neck when officers arrived at the scene.

While one Bangor officer distracted the man, Morrill approached him from behind and removed him from the railing, Morrill said.

After the incident, a Bangor officer who was on scene removed a long, red rope from the ground under the bridge.

The man was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center to be evaluated.

A Bangor man was arrested Saturday on an outstanding warrant after Bangor police Officer Myron Warner matched him to a description given as a suspect in a stolen wallet case.

Kendall Rouse, 42, allegedly swiped a Hampden man’s wallet from the service counter of the Shaw’s supermarket on Main Street in Bangor.

The man said he placed his wallet on the counter, then moved to another register before he realized he had misplaced it. When he went back to retrieve the wallet, it was gone.

The victim described a man, who had a bandage on the left side of his face, as the only other person around when the incident occurred.

A security tape provided by Shaw’s loss prevention department showed Rouse approach the counter, pocket the wallet and walk out of the store, according to Warner’s report.

Warner recognized Rouse from previous incidents, and discovered that he had recently been released on bail. Rouse had been convicted of theft three different times and was charged with robbery in the past.

Bangor officers Wade Betters and Shawn Green found Rouse on Second Street later that day and arrested him.

Because of his criminal history, Rouse’s present charges will be elevated to a Class C felony, according to police reports.

Bangor police charged a Mitchell Street man with assault early Saturday morning after it was reported he struck his 3-year-old son, leaving a red welt on the boy’s back.

Brian Wilson, 35, also was charged with criminal mischief and obstructing the report of a crime after he allegedly broke the phone his girlfriend was using to call the police, reported Bangor police Officer Chris Desmond.

The woman said she had asked Wilson to change their son’s diaper and while doing so, he struck the boy with an open hand full force on the back. When she attempted to call the police, Wilson prevented her by damaging the phone, she told police. Wilson fled in her car, but returned home about 1 a.m. Saturday and was arrested, according to the police report.

Bangor police summoned a Corinna woman on Friday after it was reported she drove past barricades as police and public works crews were dealing with heavy flooding on Stillwater Avenue.

Tanya Mullis, 27, kept driving even after Bangor police Officer Edward A. Mercier tried to get her to stop. A city public works truck pulled out in front of a worker who was waist deep in water to prevent the pickup truck Mullis was driving from putting the man in any more danger, according to the police report.

A motorist police saw driving erratically and speeding on Main Street in Bangor early Saturday morning confessed to police that she didn’t have a license and was wanted on a warrant.

Bangor police Officer Dennis Townsend confirmed that information and also determined that Alison Langen, 28, of Bangor also was intoxicated, according to the police report. After Langen was stopped on Cedar Street, she told the officer to “take me to jail” and then told him about her suspended license and warrant, according to the report.

Langen’s blood alcohol content registered 0.21 percent on the Intoxilyzer test, higher than the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

A Brewer man was arrested for operating under the influence and summoned for possession of marijuana Friday evening when Holden police responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle.

William McNutt, 53, had pulled his 2002 GMC truck over on the Wiswell Road to talk to his Florida girlfriend on a cellular phone, and had been there for a long period of time, according to several people who called to report the vehicle.

McNutt had been fighting with his girlfriend and did not receive cell phone reception at his home in Brewer, he told police.

Holden police Officer Chris Greeley responded to the calls, and upon approaching McNutt’s vehicle, noticed that his front and back license plates did not match.

The front plate on the truck was registered in Maine and the back plate was a Florida registration, according to Greeley.

Greeley also noticed that McNutt appeared to have been drinking and asked him to step out of the truck for a sobriety test, which McNutt failed. His blood alcohol level was recorded at .08 percent, which is the legal limit.

A search of his truck, however, produced a small amount of marijuana, Greeley said.

McNutt was taken to Penobscot County Jail.
