Senior Little League World Series

BANGOR – Organizers of the Senior Little League World Series are looking for singers to perform the national anthem during many of the baseball games set for Aug. 12-19 in Bangor.

Bangor is hosting the games of the Senior Little League World Series for the fifth year at Mansfield Sports Complex, 115 Thirteenth St.

“We are talking with some talented groups and soloists,” said Dave Mansfield, marketing coordinator, “but there are opportunities for other aspiring stars to belt out ‘The Star Spangled Banner.'”

Those wishing to express an interest in performing before one of the games of the Senior Little League World Series are encouraged to call Sutherland Weston Marketing Communications in Bangor at 945-9999.

The Senior Little League World Series features five regional teams from the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Bangor – the Maine District 3 champion, which serves as the host district.

BEACH to BEACH Swim for Breast Cancer

The sixth annual BEACH to BEACH Swim for Breast Cancer will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Jenkins Beach on Green Lake.

The swim will increase awareness and raise funds for Caring Connections and the many EncorePlus Breast Cancer Support Groups throughout Maine.

BEACH to BEACH is sponsored by the Bangor Y, Sandollar Spa & Pool and Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Participants can swim any distance, up to two miles. You can register as an individual or form a team of up to six friends, family members or co-workers, and collect pledges and donations until the day of the event. The registration fee is $15, and all swimmers receive a free T-shirt.

Kayakers also are needed to escort swimmers.

Or just enjoy a day at the beach. All regular beach fees collected that day will be donated to Caring Connections.

Caring Connections provides breast health education, screening, diagnostic and treatment services to uninsured or underinsured women in eastern Maine, and EncorePlus support groups for women with breast cancer.

Caring Connections is a cooperative program of Eastern Maine Medical Center and the Bangor Y, funded through philanthropic dollars raised by EMMC Healthcare Charities.

Youth Football

ORONO – Orono Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for its Youth Football program. The program is open to area youths entering grades one through six. Children in grades one and two will play flag football. Those in grades three and four will play flag football with equipment. Youngsters in grades five and six will participate in full-contact football in league play.

The program for those in grades five and six begins Wednesday, Aug. 23. Equipment is supplied by the program. The fee is $30 for those in grades one and two, and $45 for those in grades three through six. For more information, call the recreation office at 866-5065.

Bike Rodeo

ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Orono-Old Town Kiwanis, will hold a Bike Rodeo on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Asa Adams School parking lot.

Those in grades three and under will start at 9 a.m. Those in grades four and up will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Experts will be on site to inspect bikes and hand out helmets to those who need them. Children will ride a safety course and participate in other activities. For more information, call the Orono Recreation Department at 866-5065.

Relay for Life golf tournament

BREWER – M.J.’s Cap Connection Relay for Life team held its third annual Dunk Tank Day on July 30.

The team will be the host for M.J.’s Cap Connection first annual Relay for Life golf tournament 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Pine Hill Golf Course in Brewer.

The event is a three-person scramble with a shotgun start. The entry fee is $45 per person. Golf carts are not included. Prizes will be awarded in various categories. A $10,000 grand prize, donated by Tozier’s Market, for a hole in one off the 18th tee is up for grabs. A 50-50 raffle also will be held. Door prizes will be awarded and barbecue for participants will be held. For more information, call the golf course at 989-3824.

The Relay for Life team will hold its second annual Backwards Golf Tournament at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at Pine Hill Golf Course. It will be a four-person scramble with a shotgun start. The fee is $20 for members, $30 for others and does not include a golf cart. Participants will play the course backwards. A cookout will be held after the tournament. In the last three years, the M.J.’s Cap Connection Relay for Life team has raised more than $50,000 for Relay for Life.

Adult softball tournament

GLENBURN – Supporters of the Glenburn-Levant Little League will host the first annual Co-Ed Adult Softball Tournament Friday through Sunday, Aug. 11-13, at the Glenburn recreation fields.

The entrance fee is $100 a team. Each team must field a minimum of two females on a nine-person field, or three females on a 10-person field.

All teams are guaranteed two games. A maximum of 12 teams will be accepted – no A&B teams.
