State plaque to honor World War II soldiers

AUGUSTA – A dedication ceremony for a World War II plaque honoring the men and women from Maine who served during World War II will be held Monday in Augusta.

Gov. John Baldacci invites Maine’s World War II veterans and their families to join him in officially dedicating the plaque in a ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, in the Hall of Flags at the State Capitol.

The 120th Legislature established the commission that was responsible for arranging for the plaque and provided funds for 50 percent of its cost. The bronze plaque, designed by Gary Cooper of Fayette, measures about 54 inches tall by 39 inches wide and weighs about 285 pounds.
