BANGOR – A young woman fell about 15 feet from a train trestle early Sunday morning, landing in the Kenduskeag Stream. Police reported that her condition “wasn’t good” after rescuers pulled her out of the water and took her to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Bangor police Sgt. Robert Bishop wouldn’t release the name of the woman, who was rescued around 1 a.m. He said the woman was floating in and out of consciousness, but crews were able get her to shore and establish vital signs.

“I do not know her status now,” Bishop said Sunday afternoon.

Fences had been erected across the tracks during the American Folk Festival to keep people from trying to cross, but the barriers were removed to allow trains to pass during the night.

“Her male companion knew she had fallen, but couldn’t really see her,” Bishop said. “That’s a treacherous place to try to cross by foot.”

Bangor police Officer Dan Herrick is serving as the lead officer.

“He [Herrick] found the female floating face down in the mouth of the Penobscot, right on the other side of the train trestle,” Bishop said.

“An investigation was conducted, [but] it is not complete,” Bishop said. “We are taking the investigation further.”

Bangor police added that railroad police will be involved in the investigation.
