Swim team wins trophies The Bangor Y Barracudas brings home three team awards

BANGOR – The Maine Swimming Summer Long Course Combined Championships were held July 27-30 at the Canada Aquatic Centre 50-meter pool in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The Bangor Y Barracuda Swim Team, represented at the event by 25 swimmers ages 8 to 22, brought home three team trophies, seven individual trophies, three state records and a mixed assortment of individual medals and ribbons.

With more than 300 swimmers representing 19 different teams from Maine and New Brunswick, in attendance at this four-day meet, the Barracudas combined boys and girls teams finished third overall.

The girls team received a second-place finish and the 11- and 12-year-old girls finished first in their age group. In addition to team trophies, seven Barracuda swimmers received individual high point awards with 14 Barracudas finishing in the top 16 of their respective age groups.

The 11 & 12 girls relay team of Adrianna Beauchamp, Paige Nitardy, Mariah Reading and Taylor Rogers set new Maine state records – USA/Maine Swimming League – for the 400-meter freestyle relay and the 200-meter medley relay.

Mariah Reading set a new record for the 11 & 12 girls individual 200-meter breaststroke.

High point winners were:

. 10 & Under Boys: Liam Reading, third place.

. 11 & 12 Girls: Mariah Reading, first place; Paige Nitardy, seventh place; Adrianna Beauchamp, eighth place.

. 11 & 12 Boys: Cameron Dwyer, fifth.

. 13 & 14 Girls: Lauren Dwyer, first place.

. 15 & Over Girls: Erin Thomas, third place.

The Barracudas Summer Swim Team has grown from 45 swimmers to 80 swimmers this year. As the competitive winter season approaches, the coaching staff, encouraged by a strong summer season, is anticipating similar growth in this year’s winter team.

The Barracudas kicked off their season on Aug. 28 with a free two-week stroke clinic for swimmers ages 6 to 18. For information about the Barracudas Swim Team or the clinic, contact Skip Nitardy, head coach and senior director of aquatics, at 941-2808.
