Network to search for next great handyman

I know I wasn’t dreaming, but when it came time to write my column, I searched and searched and couldn’t find any information about DIY’s quest to find the next great American handyman.

You know, the guy in the neighborhood or family who everyone goes to for advice or help on how to repair a leaky faucet, install a new light fixture or fix that squeaky floorboard once and for all.

For us, it’s Rick who we call at all hours of the night when our pipes burst or the furnace goes out.

The “Handyman Superstar Challenge” recently finished its first season on HGTV Canada and was a success. The winning handyman gets his or her own home renovation show.

I know I saw a commercial calling for contestants for a new American version of the show, but I’m at a loss for information. I promise to pass it along as soon as I find out more, because I know that in Maine there’s no lack of hardworking handyman types, and I’d love to see someone from our neck of the woods audition and make it big.

For now, there are new shows airing all the time as the fall season gets under way.

We’ve danced with the stars, skated with them, and now we’re going to sing with them.

FOX’s new “Celebrity Duets” kicked off last week with WWE superstar Chris Jericho being the first to go.

The show is hosted by comedian Wayne Brady, and each week features a different celebrity paired with a different recording superstar, such as Michael Bolton, Macy Gray and Wynonna Judd.

The list of celebrities includes actress Lucy Lawless from “Xena: Warrior Princess,” actor Cheech Marin of “Cars” and “Nash Bridges,” 2004 Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Carly Patterson, and Jai Rodriguez of “Queer Eye.”

The winning celebrities will receive $100,000 to donate to a charity of their choice.

The show premiered Tuesday, but will move to its regular time slot at 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7.

A&E also has its hand in the reality TV world, and I just happened to catch a couple of episodes of “Airline.”

It’s not one worth setting the recorder for, but if you happen to be flipping channels, it can be kind of entertaining.

The show features behind-the-scenes drama of Southwest Airlines. It’s fun to watch employees handle irate passengers, deal with luggage dilemmas, and struggle with scheduling.

Check it out at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5. or Wednesday. Sept. 6.
