BATH – James Butts carried 16 times for 123 yards and a touchdown Friday night to lead defending Class B state champion Brewer to season-opening 20-8 football victory over Morse.
Delray Meeker racked up 89 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Witches. Meeker scored on runs of three and 10 yards
Butts added a 17-yard touchdown burst in the first quarter. Rick Adams completed four of nine passes for 112 yards.
Brewer plays its home opener next Friday at 7 p.m. against the Waterville Purple Panthers at Doyle Field.
Mike Walton connected with Logan Russell for a 60-yard touchdown pass for the Shipbuilders.

At Orono, Brady Vose racked up 110 yards on just 10 carries and scored on a 55-yard run in the first quarter as Mattanawcook of Lincoln rolled to the season-opening victory.
Shey Gardner took an interception 80 yards for a touchdown while Steven Braley totaled 90 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns for the Lynx.
Bruce Nason tallied 36 yards on eight carries for the Red Riots.

At Bucksport, Zane Armandi had 22 carries for 90 yards including an eight-yard touchdown run and a 35-yard touchdown pass from Isaac LeBlanc to lead Jay past Bucksport.
Trevor McCourt had 33 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter for Jay. LeBlanc added a 19-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Jake Brown converted all four extra-point kicks.
Jay totaled 223 yards: 188 rushing and 35 yards passing.
Derek Fish completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Todd Freeman in the first quarter for Bucksport and Freeman ran in an 85-yard kickoff return.
Bucksport totaled 40 yards rushing and 60 yards of total offense.

At Gardiner, Kyle Stilphen tied the game in overtime on a four yard run and gave Gardiner the win on the extra point kick.
Stilphen completed two touchdown passes to Nick Jameson for Gardiner. He also had three extra point kicks and one two-point conversion on a rush.
Dan Fortune scored a touchdown on an 85-yard kickoff return for Gardiner and Will Phelps had a 23-yard touchdown run.
Brad Carlton recorded 18 tackles for the Tigers.
Travis Lee scored two touchdowns on rushes including a one-yard run in overtime for Belfast.
Jon Walsh scored on a 42-yard run and caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jake Arthers.
Arthers had a 13-yard touchdown run and converted a two-point conversion on a rush.
