Hopkins lifts MDI past Orono

MOUNT DESERT – James Hopkins’ pull-up jumper on a drive to the foul line with 6.3 seconds left was the difference in the game as his Mount Desert Island Trojans edged the Red Riots 56-55 in schoolboy basketball action on Monday.

Daryl Watson’s potential game-tying shot at the buzzer rolled around and off the rim to end the game, in which the largest lead by either team was seven points (by Orono with four minutes left).

Hopkins led the Trojans with 16 points. Jesse Dyer and Blay Carr each scored 10.

Watson paced the Riots with 15 points, Jesse White added 12, and Eric Kempen scored 11.

At Bucksport, Jason Harvey scored 16 of his 34 points to spark a 24-14 fourth-quarter rally as the Golden Bucks claimed the victory.

Corey Guilford added 13 points for the winners and Dan Nason grabbed nine rebounds.

Ryan Garland and Ron Lane each scored 14 points for the Hawks and Wayne Shaw netted 12.

At Rockland, after grabbing four total rebounds in the first half, the Rockland boys rebounded with a better effort in the second to key a come-from-behind victory over Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

Casey Kenniston paced the Tigers with 14 points, 11 in the second half. Greg Harjula also had 14 points while Todd Curtis added 12.

Mike Susi had 16 points and Andrew St. Clair added 11 for the Huskies.

Mick had 12 points while Miller had 11 plus eight steals. Sam Ross made seven assists.

Danielle Fitzpatrick scored 14 and Alicia Dwyer added 10 points for the Hawks.

At Alfond Arena in Orono, Matt Michaud scored two goals and assisted on another as the Minutemen skated past the Indians.

Justin Cummings also scored two goals while Drew Somers and Aaron Doody recorded a goal and assist each for 5-5 Stearns of Millinocket.

Nick St. Louis led 2-12 Old Town with two goals.

Nick Simon stopped 41 of the 44 shots he faced for the Minutemen. Jason Karam and Jeff Turcotte combined to make 24 saves on 30 shots for the Indians.
