BRADFORD – With police surrounding the remote camp where he was staying Friday, suspected robber David Michaud had no place to run and surrendered to police after more than 10 days on the lam.
Michaud, 26, a transient, was wanted in connection with the Sept. 11 robbery of an Enfield couple. He is accused of hitting the couple with a baseball bat with spikes in it. Two others, Scott Lord, 41, of Enfield, and Daniel McComb, 22, have been charged in the robbery and remain at the Penobscot County Jail unable to make bail of $20,000 cash or $100,000 surety.
Michaud eluded police and had been known to be with Megan Verrill, 22, of Holden whom he once had dated. Police on Thursday issued a public plea for information about both Michaud and Verrill, who hadn’t contacted her family since shortly after the robbery.
Detective Bill Flagg of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said investigators received information Thursday night that two people matching Michaud and Verrill’s descriptions were seen on an ATV headed to a camp in the woods off Station Road in Bradford.
Flagg and Trooper Matt Grant of the Maine State Police developed sufficient information to get a warrant for the camp, which Flagg said is about two miles into the woods and only accessible by foot or ATV.
A Maine State Police airplane provided surveillance, Flagg said.
The state police tactical team set up around the camp, and a crisis negotiator was brought in. Flagg said Michaud gave himself up a short time later.
Verrill was with him and police took her into custody to interview her. Flagg said she is being charged with hindering apprehension and with violating bail conditions, as she was out on bail at the time of her arrest.
Investigators obtained a second search warrant to search the camp for additional evidence, Flagg said. The detective wouldn’t say what they were looking for in the second search warrant, only that it wasn’t included as part of the search warrant used as part of Michaud’s arrest.
The camp was so deep in the woods that investigators used ATVs from the Maine Warden Service to haul in equipment needed to process the scene.
Previously, investigators impounded Verrill’s SUV, which was believed to be involved in the robbery, and on Thursday it was examined at the Maine State Crime Lab.
