MMA tips Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior quarterback Brandon Hamilton rushed for 129 yards on 37 carries Saturday to pace Maine Maritime Academy to a 14-11 New England Football Conference victory over Westfield State.

Hamilton scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, while Jim Bower ran 19 times for 100 yards, including a 2-yard TD dive, for Maine Maritime Academy of Castine.

Westfield’s Dan Cohen completed 18 of 34 passes for 201 yards. Scott McIntyre made 12 receptions for 159 yards, among them a 10-yard TD play.

MMA forced four Owls turnovers.

Mount Ida 13, Husson 12

At Newton, Mass., Antwan Harris broke a 31-yard TD run with 2:49 remaining, and the Mustangs recovered the ensuing onside kick, to edge the Eagles.

Husson had retaken the lead at 12-7 on Andre Wildman’s 18-yard scoring run with 6:11 left, but never got the ball back.

The Eagles had their best offensive effort of the season (354 total yards) as Bryan Ferguson rushed for 108 yards, including a 4-yard TD run in the first quarter. David Chase completed 14 of 19 passes for 165 yards, with Jeremy Shorey, Wildman and Ferguson catching four balls each.

Ross Salovitch sparked the Husson defense with 10 tackles, including a sack.

Harris gained 120 yards on 23 carries for Mount Ida.

Middlebury 24, Colby 0

At Waterville, Stefan Hrdina rushed for two touchdowns Saturday as Middlebury defeated Colby in New England Small College Athletic Conference action at Seaverns Field.

Middlebury brought its record to 2-0 for the first time since 1997.

Hrdina carried 27 times and gained 94 yards while Middlebury quarterback Tiger Lyon had 84 yards passing and one touchdown.

Colby was held to 145 yards of total offense.

Justin Smith threw for 132 yards for Colby, and Brennan Moore had five catches for 53 yards.

Tufts 21, Bates 12

At Somerville, Mass., Matt Russo hooked up with David Halas for a pair of touchdown passes to lead Tufts to its 21st straight win over Bates.

After Bates took a 9-0 lead, Matt Gaylord scored on a 2-yard run and Russo tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Halas in the second quarter to put Tufts on top for good.

Russo threw a 21-yard TD pass to Halas in the fourth.

Russo finished 12 of 21 for 131 yards while Halas caught four passes for 64 yards.

Bates was led by Brandon Colon, who completed 17 of 39 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown.

Amherst 20, Bowdoin 7

At Brunswick, Aaron Rauh ran for two touchdowns as Amherst defeated Bowdoin.

Racking up 400 yards of total offense, Amherst scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Nick Kehoe was 19-for-30 for 210 yards passing for the Lord Jeffs, while Mark Hannon caught eight balls for 93 yards.

Amherst had 191 rushing yards, led by 65 from Eric NeSmith.

Bowdoin was led by Ian Merry with five catches for 83 yards, while Tom Duffy completed 13 of 31 passes for 143 yards.
