DiIelsi sparks Bears to double-overtime victory

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Freshman back Cristina DiIelsi was on the receiving end of a throw-in before dribbling and launching a shot that beat Stony Brook goalie Marisa Viola with one second left in the second overtime as the University of Maine women’s soccer team edged Stony Brook 2-1 Thursday.

It was her second goal of the season and enabled Maine to improve to 10-1-1 overall, 2-1 in America East. Stony Brook fell to 7-5-1, 2-2, respectively.

Maine began the week ranked 23rd in the country.

Junior Marie-Michele Bouchard staked Maine to a 1-0 lead with her first career goal in the first half.

Kate Collins equalized early in the second half by converting a Brooke Barbuto pass.

Jasmine Phillips made five saves on 14 shots for the Black Bears while Viola wound up with seven saves on 16 shots.

Field hockey

Southern Maine 1, St. Joseph’s 0

At Gorham, Caitlin Albert scored an unassisted goal at 55:05 in the second half to lead the University of Southern Maine past Saint Joseph’s College.

Allie Hill stopped five of nine shots for the 6-6 Huskies.

Karrie Sirois made three saves on 12 shots for the 3-6 Monks.
