Parents of pregnant teenager indicted

PORTLAND – A North Yarmouth couple accused of kidnapping their pregnant daughter in an attempt to force her to have an out-of-state abortion now face charges of assault and terrorizing, in addition to kidnapping.

The Cumberland County grand jury handed up the indictments late Wednesday against Nicholas and Lola Kampf, who were arrested Sept. 15 at a shopping center in Salem, N.H., after their daughter, Katelyn, 19, fled and called police on a cell phone.

The Kampfs were originally charged with kidnapping. District Attorney Stephanie Anderson said the two counts of misdemeanor assault alleged that the Kampfs pinned their daughter to the ground in two separate incidents before they forced her into their Lexus. The terrorizing charges stem from the alleged kidnapping, the prosecutor said.

New Hampshire dropped kidnapping charges against the parents after Maine officials elected to prosecute the case.

The Kampfs’ lawyer has denied that the couple kidnapped their daughter and said they never intended to force her to have an abortion.
