Birth Night program

BANGOR – Eastern Maine Medical Center’s labor and delivery department will hold Birth Night on Thursday, Oct. 19. The event is a free information and education program for expectant mothers and their partners. Moms-to-be will learn about the services offered at EMMC and by agencies around the region.

In addition, the Maine Doula Association will give a presentation about doulas and what they do. Karen Kohlmeyer, early intervention pediatric physical therapist and owner of My Gym for Children in Brewer, will give a talk about the importance of “tummy time” for babies in relation to development.

Birth Night is free, and there will be refreshments and door prizes. For more information, call 973-8742.

Annual Fashion Show

BANGOR – The St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary will hold its 31st annual fashion show Thursday, Nov. 2, with afternoon and evening events at the Bangor Civic Center.

The Fall Festival of Fashions and luncheon will begin at noon. Attendees will spend the afternoon eating lunch and viewing the latest fall fashions modeled by local television station personalities Donna Gormley, Steve McKay, Catherine Pegram and Jon Small, community leaders and hospital employees.

Clothing has been provided by businesses including Talbot’s, TerraCotta, The Grasshopper Shop, Epic Sports, The Pretty Woman and Henry’s Bridal Boutique.

The Elegant Evening Event will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour, followed by dinner, a brief Vintage Fashion Showcase with clothing provided by Vintage Finery Costumes and Bridal, and an auction with the Rev. Robert Carlson as auctioneer.

Tickets for the Fall Festival of Fashions and luncheon may be purchased in advance for $25 or the day of the show for $30.

Tickets for the Elegant Evening Event may be purchased in advance for $30.

The auxiliary hosts several fundraising activities throughout the year and oversees the operation of Helen’s Gift Shop in the hospital’s Broadway lobby. Proceeds received from the auxiliary’s efforts benefit St. Joseph Healthcare.

This year’s events are sponsored by Weber Mortgage, Norlen’s Water Treatment LLC and Merrill Bank.

Clinical supervision

The Acadia Hospital will sponsor a two-day conference on clinical supervision on Oct. 30 and Nov. 3.

The conference will address a variety of issues including familiarizing participants with major models of supervision, assisting participants in identifying personal leadership style and model of supervision, and engaging them in a review of legal, ethical and personnel issues in supervision.

The two-day session is intended for clinical supervisors working in the mental health and substance abuse fields including alcohol and drug counselors, certified clinical supervisors, master’s level social workers, professional counselors and those who wish to become clinical supervisors.

Continuing education units are pending for alcohol and drug counseling providers, including certified clinical supervisors. The conference offers 9.5 CPE hours for social workers.

EMH vice president

BREWER – Philip Johnson has assumed the role of vice president of human resources at Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems. Johnson has more than 25 years of experience in human resource leadership and organizational development. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration at the University of Denver and master’s degree in organizational behavior at the University of Hartford.

Johnson has been vice president of human resources and head of human resources for HSBC Investment Bank, director and senior consultant of human resources for Lincoln National Corp., and vice president of human resources and organizational effectiveness for Saint Mary’s Health System in Connecticut.

He has managed and led diverse, multisite business environments, including health care, financial services, pharmaceutical and multinational environments in the United States, United Kingdom, Africa and Asia.
