Friends of Dakin Pool

BANGOR – The Friends of Dakin Pool organization is being awarded a $25,000 grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation to support Summer in the City: The Campaign for Dakin Pool.

Stephanie Leonard, administrator of the foundation said, “The Kings are aware of the hard work that has been done by a dedicated group of volunteers and they are happy to be of assistance with this important community effort.”

The $100,000 capital campaign to renovate Bangor’s first public swimming pool was launched in June. The Kings’ grant brings the total raised thus far to $85,000. According to Friends President Mike Robinson, the generosity of the Kings, together with support from the public over the next three weeks, positions the campaign for a successful finish.

“We are thrilled with the King’s endorsement of our efforts to renovate Dakin Pool for children and families in Bangor,” Robinson said. “We are working hard to reach out to the Bangor community for support, and we hope that others who share the Kings’ dedication to our community will be inspired to support this very special effort.”

The campaign will fund five projects – a 28-feet by 36-feet pool house to include restrooms, a first aid station, lifeguard office and outside showers; a new fence to create a large grassy picnic and play area adjacent to the pool; repairs to the pool deck; a new walkway; and a 10-foot-by-14-foot equipment building.

Ski equipment sale

BANGOR – Penobscot Valley Ski Club will hold its 36th annual ski and snowboard equipment sale 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Bangor Parks and Recreation Department building, 647 Main St. New and used cross country and downhill skis, boots, bindings, poles, ski wear, helmets and snowboards will be available at affordable prices.

Mix and mingle with other skiing enthusiasts and learn about new equipment from knowledgeable vendors.

Proceeds go back to the community to support the nonprofit club’s programs such as Learn-to-Ski, Racing Development Program, Great Caribou Bog Race, Nordic events and discounted ski trips to Quebec, Sugarloaf and Sunday River.

PVSC has been involved with teaching youth skiing in the area for 70 years. The purpose of the club is to promote skiing and snow sports through activities, instruction and competition. PVSC supports ski-related charities and encourages Maine families to get outside to enjoy the winter snow.

HERMON – Penobscot Valley Ski Club will hold a membership meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Hermon Mountain lodge. The club will provide pizza and show ski movies.
