Since last March, when Gary and Nancy Metilly and their 11 children lost their Milo home and everything in it to fire, Ed and Ethel Treworgy have been heading up volunteer efforts to help the family rebuild.
Ed Treworgy wrote me recently to report that even though people have been extremely generous and helpful, the Metilly home is unfinished, and the “small house John and Bonnie Bishop have so generously provided for them for several months” will not be available much longer, since the Bishops “now have a need for the house.”
And while the Metilly house remains unfinished and unoccupied, Treworgy reported the family faced even more tragedy, in October, when “Nancy gave birth to their little boy,” who died shortly thereafter.
But the family is moving forward, “trying to build a house with money donated to them,” Treworgy continued.
However, Treworgy added, “they don’t have enough to get the job done.”
“The roof is on the house, but the outside walls are not completely covered with sheathing,” he wrote, “and they need windows.”
Sheetrock for the inside, kitchen appliances, wiring and plumbing are still on the waiting list.
Treworgy wrote that he hopes our readers “who have shown such great generosity already, might be able to help them again so that they can move into their own house as soon as possible.”
Donations can be sent to the Metilly Family Fund, Maine Savings Credit Union, 122 Park St., Milo 04463.
Any contributions would be most welcome and appreciated.
Russ Van Arsdale, co-director of Maine-ly Music Chorus, which he describes as a group “known in the Bangor area as those guys who like to sing barbershop music,” is hosting its annual A Capella Music Program at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at Minsky Auditorium at the University of Maine in Orono.
This is the 33rd annual concert by the Bangor Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
In addition to the chorus, three chapter quartets also will entertain you, as well as two women’s quartets.
Out On A Whim is a local foursome, Van Arsdale wrote, and Along Four the Ride was a fifth-place finisher in last year’s Harmony Inc. International Championship.
Tickets are $10 and are available at the door or from any member of the chorus.
A portion of the proceeds benefit the chapter’s charities.
People are invited to dress in their best ’50s attire when they attend the Friends of the Dakin Pool Spaghetti Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Abraham Lincoln School, 45 Forest Ave. in Bangor.
Admission is $10 for adults and free for children under 16, and any and all additional donations to Summer in the City-The Campaign for Dakin Pool, will be graciously accepted.
The fundraiser features special guest chef Gov. John Baldacci, and proceeds will benefit the $100,000 Dakin Pool campaign.
The benefit is dedicated to the memory of the late Paul Baldacci, who helped launch the project with a spaghetti dinner in June 2005. The governor’s brother died in January.
Dakin Pool opened in 1956, campaign director Alicia Nichols said, so attendees are “encouraged to dig out your glad rags and join the fun” dancing to “the twist, mashed potato and, of course, the swim!”
The campaign will fund a new, multipurpose pool house, a new fence, repairs to the pool deck, a new walkway and a new equipment building for the pump and filtration system.
For more information about the campaign, visit www.dakinpool.com or call 947-4051.
Tax-deductible contributions can be mailed to Friends of Dakin Pool, P.O. Box 2657, Bangor 04402-2657.
