Red Cross offers tips for a safe Halloween

PRESQUE ISLE – The Aroostook County branch of the American Red Cross would like to remind all trick-or-treaters of these 13 tips for a happy Halloween.

. Use face paint rather then masks or things that will cover the eyes.

. Wear light-colored or reflective clothing so that you are more visible. Put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards and broomsticks.

. Map out the route you plan to take and share the route with family and friends. If possible, take an adult along with you to share the fun.

. Always carry a flashlight with you to light your path.

. Stay on the sidewalk and never walk in the street.

. Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars.

. Never hide behind or cross the street between parked cars.

. Go to the corner to cross the street.

. Don’t go near open flames or candles. Costumes can be extremely flammable.

. Visit only homes that are well-lit or have the porch light on.

. Accept treats at the door and never go into a stranger’s house.

. Be cautious of animals and strangers.

. Have an adult inspect treats before eating. Don’t eat candy if the package is already open. Small, hard pieces of candy are choking hazards for young children.
