Basketball and cheering

ORRINGTON – The Orrington Recreation Commission is preparing for the 2006 basketball and cheerleading season. This year the commission will offer basketball programs for children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Boys and girls leagues may be set up for some grades depending on participation.

A cheering program will be available for elementary school pupils.

The commission will register participants 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, and Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Center Drive School cafeteria. The cost is $15 per child or $30 per family. No registrations will be accepted after teams are assigned Saturday, Nov. 18. Games begin in December and continue through January.

The commission is looking for volunteers to help as coaches, assistant coaches and referees. Team sponsors from local businesses and the community also are needed.

To keep the community informed, the commission maintains a presence on the town of Orrington Web site. Registration forms and updated information such as schedules will be available online at www.orrington.govoffice.com under the “Municipal Departments,” “Recreation,” “ORC Forms” links.

Brewer Youth Hockey

BREWER – Register for Brewer Youth Hockey’s Dunkin’ Donuts Learn to Skate and Learn to Play program 9-10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at the T.J. Ryan Center, 90 Acme Road. On-ice practice begins 10:20-11:50 a.m. Practices will be held every Sunday through February. The cost is $99 for 16 weeks. For more information, call Roy Boothby at 989-2507.

Bangor Youth Hockey

BANGOR – Bangor Youth Hockey will begin its Learn to Play program at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at Sawyer Ice Arena. The instructional program teaches the basics of playing hockey in a fun, noncompetitive environment. The cost is $100 for 14 sessions.

Participants must be able to skate independently. Helmets and mittens or gloves are required. To register, visit www.bangoryouthhockey.org, or call Rich Powell, BYH president, at 942-5453.

Basketball programs

ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its coming basketball programs.

Hoops 101 is an instructional program for children in kindergarten and grade one.

Children in grades two to five will play recreational basketball, and those in grades five to eight will be on travel teams.

Registration deadline for basketball programs is Friday, Nov. 17, for recreation teams, and Saturday, Nov. 4, for travel teams.

The department also is seeking coaches for basketball season. Assistant coaches and referees also are needed. For more information, call Tim at the recreation office at 866-5065.
