PORTLAND – Democratic Reps. Michael Michaud and Tom Allen have gained such a fundraising advantage over their opponents that they’re sharing campaign money with other Democratic candidates across the country.
Michaud has given $64,000 to other candidates since July 1 and $62,125 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. His political action committee, called Mill to the Hill, has distributed another $59,500.
Michaud, who plans to compete for chairmanship of the Veterans Affairs Committee if he wins and Democrats win a majority, gave to dozens of candidates across the country.
“The congressman is hoping for a majority so that we can move forward the legislation he cares about, including trade, affordable health care, jobs and the economy,” said Monica Castellanos, a campaign spokeswoman.
Allen’s campaign committee has distributed $9,500 to other candidates and $45,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee since July 1.
Both Michaud and Allen enjoy huge fundraising advantages over their opponents. Michaud faces Republican challenger Scott D’Amboise, and Allen faces both Republican Darlene Curley and independent Dexter Kamilewicz.
Michaud, who represents Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, raised $676,795 in the campaign and had $27,731 left by Oct. 18, according to Federal Election Commission reports due Oct. 26. D’Amboise, of Lisbon Falls, had $10,280 left after raising $28,808.
In the 1st District, Allen had $440,019 on hand, after raising $931,392. Curley, a state representative from Scarborough, had $13,998 left after raising $170,764. Kamilewicz, from Orrs Island, raised $32,399 through Sept. 30 and had $10,419 left at that point.
The fundraising disparity was even greater in the Senate race.
Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe had $1.3 million on hand Oct. 18, out of the $3.6 million raised during the campaign. Her Democratic opponent, Jean Hay Bright of Dixmont, had $13,713 on hand. She raised $97,250, which included $13,818 that she lent to herself.
