Mitchell beats St. Joseph’s for title

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Chris Mackinnel, Joshua Griffo and Joshua DaSilveira each netted a goal Sunday as the Mitchell College men’s soccer team shut out Saint Joseph’s 3-0 in the Division III Independents Northeast Championship Sunday.

Newbury defeated UMaine-Presque Isle 1-0 in the consolation game.

St. Joe’s of Standish advanced by beating UMPI 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday.

In the championship, Alex Deltgan recorded two assists while Kevin Patterson notched one for Mitchell. Ryan West made two saves on seven shots.

Cory Smith made nine saves on 22 shots for the Monks.

In the consolation, Evan Hudson netted the winning goal for Newbury off a corner kick by Joseph Ryan. Brian Picanco made seven saves on 11 shots.

Scott Clenchy made six saves on 17 shots for the Owls.

Saint Joseph’s David Hakes, David Rosquette and Kevin Hageman were each named to the all-tournament team, as were UMPI’s Trevor Parent and Travis Parent.

On Saturday, Rosquete netted a goal off a cross from Melega 1:40 into the second overtime to lead St. Joe’s by UMPI.

Hakes started the scoring with a goal in the first half for St. Joe’s. Smith made two saves on five shots for the 9-10 Monks.

Matt Petrie tied the game for UMPI off a pass from Trevor Parent in the second half. Clenchy made seven saves on 12 shots for the 7-7-1 Owls.
