Gorham, Falmouth are champs

WINDHAM – Rachele Burns scored with less than 12 minutes left in the game as the Gorham High girls soccer team defended their 2005 state championship and won their third straight state crown with a 2-0 victory over Mount Ararat of Topsham.

Gorham, which wraps up its season with a 17-0-1 record, won the 2004 Class B championship.

Luci Pike made four saves to earn the shutout.

Jessica Stahl finished with 16 saves for the 14-3-1 Eagles.

Class B

Falmouth 5, Winslow 0

At Winslow, Carly Applebaum scored two goals to power the Yachtsmen past the Black Raiders for the second straight year.

Olivia Rowse, Cara Kilroy, Sara Girouard chipped in with a goal apiece as 14-0-3 Falmouth won its fourth state title since 2001.

Falmouth goalie Rachel Bennett recorded the shutout. Brynne Davis was the starting goalie for 16-2 Winslow.

Football

Foxcroft 36, John Bapst 7

At Foxcroft, Brad Bellemare carried the ball 12 times for 198 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 1 Foxcroft Academy by No. 7 John Bapst in an LTC Class C semifinal.

Foxcroft advanced to next weekend’s regional final against Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.

Bellemare scored on a 48-yard run in the first quarter and a 92-yard run in the fourth quarter. Ben Provost had five carries for 105 yards, including a 82-yard touchdown run. The Ponies had a total of 321 rushing yards.

Kyle Gallant had six completions for 109 yards and a touchdown while Nick Smith had 18 carries for 66 yards for John Bapst.
