Alex Martin, the Van Buren forward who scored the winning goal in overtime in Saturday’s Class D state soccer championship, was one of 10 winners of the “Butch” Shaw Awards given annually by the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials.
Martin was one of two Class D boys to receive the Shaw award. His schoolmate, Megan Lajoie of Van Buren, was one o three Class D girls winners.
Presque Isle also had two winners, Trent Legassie for Class B boys and Angela Norsworthy for Class B girls.
The rest of the Shaw award winners were Caribou’s Caleb Swanberg (Class B boys), Madawaska’s Tyler Levesque (Class C boys), Fort Kent’s Nicole Chasse (Class C girls), Central Aroostook of Mars Hill’s Sam Clockedile (Class D boys), Fort Fairfield’s Sadie Ayoob (Class D girls) and Wisdom of St. Agatha’s Nicole St. Pierre (Class D girls).
The award is named for Clyde “Butch” Shaw, an athlete, coach and official in Aroostook County who died in 1985.
