Tilton, Smith win Heisman honor

Meagan Tilton of John Bapst and Owen “Kit” Smith of Brunswick have been named Maine winners of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, according to a press release from the organization Monday.

Tilton and Smith were selected based on their outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community service, according to the release, which added that both students embody the spirit of the Heisman tradition through hard work and dedication on and off the field.

Both Tilton and Smith are honor students at their respective schools while Tilton is a standout in field hockey and track and field and Smith in soccer and ice hockey.

Tilton and Smith move on to the next phase of the competition with the other state winners and the District Columbia as they seek to make the cut to 12 national finalists announced in mid-November. The national winners are then announced in December in conjunction with the collegiate Heisman presentation in New York.

Tilton and Smith were selected from a field of Maine finalists that included: girls – Lindsey Gordon (Bucksport), Kylie Bragdon (Sumner of East Sullivan), Ashley Marandola (Madison), Lacey Cartier (York), Emily Rousseau (Biddeford), Abigail Iselborn (McAuley of Portland), Melissa Harvey (Dirigo of Dixfield), Mollie Hammond (Waterville), and Megan Korhonen (Greater Houlton Christian Academy); boys – Nicholas Hubbard (John Bapst), Corey DeWitt (Ellsworth), Matthew Low (Lawrence of Fairfield), Davis Mercier (Livermore Falls), David Gerrish (Mountain Valley of Rumford), Elliott Munn (Oxford Hills of South Paris), Matthew Burch (Lincoln Academy of Newcastle), Drew Farrar (GHCA), and Thomas Caron (Fort Kent).
