School committee rules

In reading the article (BDN, Nov. 17) concerning Dan Tremble, one of Bangor’s most civic-minded citizens, and a person whom I respect immensely, I felt the guilty party was omitted from the article.

The Bangor school system, probably the best in Maine, should not be held accountable for ensuring candidates meet all eligible guidelines. How would the Bangor school system know if Mr. Tremble and his wife had already decided that if he were to win she would step down?

So, let me ask a few questions regarding individuals seeking political office, be it the Bangor City Council or the Bangor school committee. Who is responsible that the individual running for office meets residency requirements? Who is responsible that the individual running meets the minimum age? When an individual files papers at City Hall, is he given information pertaining to the prerequisites, the responsibilities involving the meeting dates, the number of signatures required for the petitions, and any other legal prerequisites?

If there weren’t a statement on the school committee application regarding the Maine law stated in your article, I would recommend City Hall add the statement.
