UM’s McInerney given warning by president

A written warning was issued to UMaine women’s basketball coach Ann McInerney from President Robert A. Kennedy, the Portland Press Herald reported Thursday after it received Kennedy’s letter to McInerney through a Freedom of Information request.

McInerney received the letter on Nov. 30 after her involvement in a Nov. 5 incident in Bangor when her assistant coach, Kathy Karlsson was arrested and eventually charged with drunken driving.

McInerney was a passenger in the car and gave her name as “Martin” to the state trooper who made the stop. She issued a public apology on Dec. 1.

Kennedy’s letter to McInerney stated: “I am deeply disappointed in your conduct, and I want to assure you that any similar occurrences in the future will result in serious consequences. Excepting the events of Nov. 5, you have been an outstanding employee and an exemplary representative of this university. I am confident that we can move past this recent incident, and that your future as UMaine’s coach remains bright.”
