Lavertu leads Howlers by Orono 52-32 Central, Dexter post victories

ORONO – Kelsy Lavertu netted 16 points as the Penobscot Valley Howlers pulled away for a 52-32 season-opening high school girls basketball victory over the Orono Red Riots Friday night.

Mindy Dolley chipped in with nine points for Penobscot Valley of Howland.

Brittney Paul’s 10 points led Orono.

At Calais, Chris Taylor scored the go-ahead basket with less than 30 seconds left and Robbie Rogers added two insurance free throws as the defending Class C state champions opened their season with a narrow victory.

The game was close throughout, with Lee building an eight-point second-quarter lead before Calais rallied behind Brandon Tomah to forge a 30-30 tie at intermission.

Calais then moved out to a seven-point fourth-quarter lead, only to have the Pandas rally to take a 67-66 lead in the final minute.

Tomah finished with 19 points and nine rebounds for Calais, while Taylor added 14 points, eight rebounds and a strong defensive performance.

Tom Bird paced Lee with a game-high 23 points. Devan Parker added 17 points and Peter Pickereing scored 16 for the Pandas.
