BRIDGTON – Firefighters had a blaze under control Saturday after battling it for much of the day.
The flames were extinguished in the late afternoon, but some areas of the New England Marble and Granite building on South High Street were still smoldering, according to Assistant Fire Chief Tom Harriman.
About three-quarters of the 12,000-square-foot building had severe structural damage and the remainder was damaged by smoke and heat, Harriman said.
Several firefighters suffered heat exhaustion, Harriman said, but no other injuries were reported.
About 14 fire departments were called to the scene after the fire was reported around 10 a.m.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. Officials from the State Fire Marshal’s Office were expected to begin their investigation Sunday or Monday, Harriman said.
