Hull sparks Bapst Crusaders roll by Old Town

BANGOR – Casey Hull didn’t plan to start out with a missed breakaway and a penalty in Tuesday afternoon’s Eastern Maine Class B hockey matchup.

The John Bapst center made up for it later in the game, factoring into all four goals as the Crusaders rolled to a 4-0 victory over Old Town at Sawyer Arena.

Hull scored two goals and assisted on two others to help Bapst move to 4-2.

“He’s definitely a playmaker for the team,” said defenseman Chase Huckestein. “You can tell the other guys out there really respect him.”

It was Huckestein who had a chat with Hull at one point in the second period, especially after Hull missed an open breakaway earlier.

“He got on me a little,” said Hull, who is a sophomore. “He said, ‘Come on, you have to finish.'”

Hull went out after a tripping penalty 15 seconds into the second period. About 111/2 minutes later, Hull broke free, carried the puck down the left wing, and poked it past Old Town goalie Dan LeBreton. Ethan Sale recorded the assist.

“I was in the box and [Coach Adam King] told me to go on the ice when the penalty was over,” Hull said. “Ethan just threw it up the boards trying to ice it … and I came out of the boards, got the puck, and put it in.”

The Crusaders scored three goals in the third period, including an unassisted score by Hull. He assisted on goals by Neal LaFrance and Connor Scofield.

Hull’s second goal and LaFrance’s score both came on power plays. John Bapst outshot Old Town 27-12, but the Crusaders managed only two shots on goal during a 5-on-3 power play for a span of 1:42 in the second half.

“We knew we had to step it up,” Hull said. “We just weren’t finishing. … We just had to stick with what we were doing.”

The 1-4 Coyotes, who did a good job holding off the Crusaders during the 5-on-3, struggled all game with penalties.

“It obvious made a difference,” first-year Old Town coach Kevin Partridge said. “Penalties definitely hurt us. We can’t work when we’re playing down. We did somehow survive the 3-on-5. We’ve got great players, but we’re still a young team.”

At the same time they cranked up their offense, the Crusaders got defensive. Bapst allowed one Old Town shot in the third period.

“It was everybody,” Huckestein said. “The forwards were backchecking, the defense was doing their job, and [goalie] Nate Kuneman did a great job.”

Kuneman recorded 12 saves and LeBreton had 23.
