Wilderness trust group buys land Alder Stream Project to preserve 1,500 acres

The Northeast Wilderness Trust, a regional conservation organization, announced in December the completion of a two-year campaign to preserve 1,500 acres in Dover-Foxcroft, Milo and Atkinson.

The NWT purchased the property from a conservation-minded owner who offered the property to NWT at a reduced price.

The northern boundary of the property is the Piscataquis River, and the property contains a large section of Alder Stream.

The watershed is the focus of the NWT’s conservation efforts because of its implication on regional environmental health, recreational opportunities and ecological diversity.

Approximately 12,000 acres in the watershed have already been protected by state and private organizations.

To acquire the Alder Stream Project, the NWT raised $340,000 with the help of local individuals and foundations.

The NWT works with partners to preserve wild land through conservation easements and land acquisition in Maine, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.
