Broadway Tonight 3

ORONO – Broadway Tonight 3, a cabaret evening of show tunes from the past 60 years, produced by Orono High School students to raise funds toward a school auditorium, will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the OHS gym.

The event will be directed and produced by OHS junior Hannah Cyrus. The show involves a cast of 12 students with keyboard accompaniment by Emmett Harrity.

Tickets are $8 for table seating, $6 general admission. Desserts and beverages will be available. Tickets are available at The Store/Ampersand and at the door.

Jordan Planetarium

ORONO – The University of Maine Maynard F. Jordan Planetarium at Wingate Hall will offer “Worlds in Motion” at 7 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 20 and 27. The program explains the movements of the sky and everything beyond with a nod to constant activity of everything around and inside our bodies.

Also offered this month is the entertaining tour of the solar system, “Destination Pluto,” at 2 p.m. Sundays, Jan. 21 and 28.

From the atoms in our bodies to the galaxies beyond our sight, everything is moving. Discover the way the Earth and its neighbors move through space and the surprising speeds that they – and we – travel through space in “Worlds of Motion.” In a less shocking interlude, visitors also will explore some of the constellations and stars of the Maine sky.

“Destination Pluto” is a journey of discovery for space travelers of all ages. It tours the wonders of the sun’s system and reviews the recent change in Pluto’s identity. Recently discovered moons, far-flung mysterious ice worlds, rings and views of alien landscapes are all part of the adventure of “Destination Pluto” at the Jordan Planetarium.

Admission is $3, free with a MaineCard. For information, reservations or questions, call 581-1341 or visit www.galaxymaine.com.

Brewer High School

BREWER – Brewer High School invites members of the community to participate in developing a new senior seminar course that will be part of the school’s new Honors Diploma Program.

Students pursuing an honors diploma follow a pathway similar to a college liberal arts education with requirements in math, language arts, social studies, science and modern languages. Students who receive an honors diploma will be given automatic acceptance into the Honors College at the University of Maine after being admitted to the university.

The first class of honors diploma recipients will graduate in 2008.

The senior seminar will be one way that honors diploma students can fulfill a senior requirement. The course will use an interdisciplinary approach to study individuals in history ranging from the Italian renaissance to the United States civil rights movement. Units on each individual will last three to four weeks and students will read primary source documents, listen to lectures on audio pod casts, attend a weekly Socratic seminar and submit a written paper at the end of each unit. The course will be supported by a Web site and cultural experiences such as concerts, plays, college lectures and field trips.

Units on these 12 individuals will be developed for the 2007-08 school year: Michaelangelo, Queen Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare, Thomas Jefferson, Ludwig van Beethoven, Charles Darwin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Susan B. Anthony, Marie Curie, Mahatma Ghandi, Rachel Carson and Martin Luther King Jr.

Community members with expertise on one of them are invited to participate on a team that will select readings, record pod casts, develop themes of seminars and suggest cultural experiences. It is anticipated that teams will meet three to four times, with work being completed by June.

To participate and to receive more information, e-mail Glendon Rand at grand@breweredu.org or call Brewer High School at 989-4140. A detailed overview of the course is posted on the Academics section of the school’s Web site at www.breweredu.org.
