PORTLAND – Jared Turcotte, a running back and linebacker from Lewiston High School, was named Sunday night as the recipient of the 36th James J. Fitzpatrick Trophy presented annually to the state’s top senior high school football player.

Turcotte led Lewiston to an Eastern Maine Class A playoff berth this season, rushing for 1,813 yards while averaging 7.9 yards per carry and scoring 23 touchdowns. He also made 113 solo tackles on defense while also returning punts and kickoffs and handling the Blue Devils’ punting and kickoff duties.

The Division I college prospect, who previously was named the state’s 2006 Gatorade player of the year as well as the Pine Tree Conference Class A co-player of the year, finished his high school career with 4,562 rushing yards.

Turcotte was selected from a field of three finalists that also included running back Aaron Champagne of Lawrence of Fairfield and quarterback Chris Treister of Portland.

Champagne, co-player of the year with Turcotte in the PTC Class A ranks, led Lawrence to an undefeated season and the Class A state championship. He rushed for more than 1,200 yards and scored 11 touchdowns while also starting on defense at safety and returning punts and kickoffs.

Treister passed for 1,846 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 574 yards while running Portland’s spread offense. He finished his career as the school’s all-time passing leader, and already has made a verbal commitment to join the University of Maine football program next fall.

Other semifinalists for the award were Josh Ranger of Hampden Academy, Max Baillargeon of Thornton Academy of Saco, Ben Delcourt of Bonny Eagle of Standish, Jon Mitchell of Gorham, Brandon Morrow of Maranacook of Readfield, Andrew Pochebit of Cheverus of Portland and Brian Sandora of Deering of Portland.
