Orono students to take the stage

ORONO – From “Oklahoma!” to “Les Miserables,” a cast of students from Orono High School will bring Broadway Tonight 3 to Orono at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the high school gym.

The cabaret evening is directed and produced by junior Hannah Cyrus, whose older sister, Afton, produced two such events in 1998 and 1999.

Broadway Tonight 3 features Orono High School seniors Jessamy Luthin, Sam Hallman and Aya Mares; juniors Hannah Cyrus, Alec Rose, Annie Monroe and Wesley Osterhout; and sophomores Daniel Legere, Patrick Molloy, Amy Mares and Fionna O’Connell.

OHS music teacher Steve Hodgdon will play bass and OHS student Colin Diggins will play percussion. Junior Emmett Harrity is musical director and plays keyboard.

The event will be staged cabaret style, with audience members seated at tables. Homemade desserts and beverages will be for sale.

Harrity and Cyrus are both contributing their talents in fulfillment of their service learning projects at OHS. Broadway Tonight 3 continues a tradition started by Cyrus’ older sister Afton, who produced the first Broadway Tonight in 1999.

The following year the OHS Auditorium Fund was established and Broadway Tonight 2 raised more than $4,000 for the fund.

Supporting the OHS Auditorium Fund is a way for community members to acknowledge the need for such a facility and to symbolize their ongoing commitment to such a project. The fund has raised $7,000 to date.

Proceeds from Broadway Tonight 3 will be invested in the Auditorium Fund. Supporters expect that the fund will one day be used to equip the badly needed facility.

Broadway Tonight 3 features musical numbers from 15 Broadway shows including “Oklahoma!,” “Brigadoon,” “West Side Story,” “Oliver!,” “A Chorus Line,” “Sweeney Todd” and “Les Miserables.”

Tickets for Broadway Tonight 3 are $6 general admission, $8 for table seating. Tickets are on sale at The Store/Ampersand in Orono and at the door.
