BRANDON GASTIA
A member of the Old Town indoor track and field team, Gastia continued his strong performances in the long and triple jumps by winning both events during a meet against Bangor, Brewer and Orono. Gastia won the long jump with a best of 19 feet, 3.5 inches and also placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 42-5.
Small School (Classes C-D)
CHRIS BYRON
Byron, a senior center on the Schenck of East Millinocket basketball team, helped the Wolverines extend their winning streak to 11 games with two strong performances. He had 20 points and 15 rebounds in a victory against Lee Academy, and followed that up with 18 points and 13 rebounds as Schenck defeated Orono to remain atop the Eastern Maine Class D standings.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
KELLEY PARADIS
A junior guard for the Nokomis of Newport basketball team, Paradis scored a team-high 12 points, including the game-winning basket with 4.3 seconds left to give the Warriors a 40-39 victory Friday over previously undefeated Messalonskee of Oakland. The win broke Nokomis’ 4-game losing streak.
Small School (Classes C-D)
MALLORY AMES
Ames, a 6-6 senior center, scored 20 points, including the 1,000th point of her career Friday in a 40-20 win over Central of Corinth. She set up the career accomplishment with a 44-point performance in a 69-39 win Wednesday over Searsport. The 44 points is a school record for points in a game, besting her sister Ashley’s 43 set in 2005.
