String of obscenities leads man to jail

An aborted taxi ride and a slew of bad language landed an Orland man in jail.

Shortly after midnight, Old Town police received a report that one of two people riding to the university in a cab had vomited.

“The cab was going to charge them a fee to clean it, or gave them an option to clean it out themselves,” Old Town police Sgt. Scott Casey said Sunday.

At Irving Mainway on Main Street, the couple cleaned up the mess, but the driver didn’t want them in the car and left them at the store.

Officers at the scene tried to explain to Christian Eberhardt, 21, of Orland that they were trying to help him get a ride back to campus.

“He kept using obscene language toward them and was given a disorderly conduct warning because the store had customers present,” Casey said.

The store clerk eventually agreed to let the two stay while they waited for a ride. The officers left but were called back about an hour later when the two began arguing.

“The male continued to use obscene language toward [the officers],” Casey said. “Essentially, he said he really didn’t care if there were customers or not.”

Eberhardt was arrested for disorderly conduct and was taken to Penobscot County Jail. He later was released on bail.

A Bangor man was arrested and charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend and obstructing a report of crime Saturday night.

Police say Eugene Sylvia, 31, of Bangor argued with his ex-girlfriend about her visiting a neighbor who lived on the floor above her. Sylvia suspected she was performing sexual acts for drugs.

According to police reports, Sylvia dragged the woman down the stairs three times. He allegedly knocked pictures off the wall and tapped the woman on the head with a hammer, warning her he would hit her if she tried to resist. He then scratched his stomach with a knife, intending to blame it on the woman if she spoke up.

Sylvia eventually let the woman visit neighbors after he learned police were on the way. Witnesses said they could hear the couple arguing and that it was a common occurrence.

When Sylvia told police that his ex-girlfriend cut him, an officer noticed the cut was on the right side of his abdomen and asked if he was right-handed. The cuts curved upward and extended laterally, and the officers believed the wounds were self-inflicted, according to the police report.

Sylvia was taken to Penobscot County Jail and is scheduled to appear in Bangor District Court on Feb. 22.

A Bangor man who had his bicycle stolen from his workplace in Hampden was reunited with his favorite means of transportation last week.

Tristan Swallow, 20, was working at Edwards Supermarket on Western Avenue when his bike, which he rides to work every day, was taken. Police had no leads. Swallow was left without a way to get to work.

The bike was found recently in a snowbank outside the Lura E. Hoit Memorial Pool.

Before the bike was found, an unidentified woman donated another bike to Swallow, who now gets to choose which he will take to work.

Maine Drug Enforcement agents arrested a New York City man Saturday after he got off a bus in Bangor, the result of a two-week investigation, according to an agency press release.

Agents were waiting for Shinere Taylor, 20, at the Greyhound Bus Terminal, where they found him in possession of 1 ounce of heroine valued at $10,000 and 2 ounces of cocaine worth more than $6,000. The agency believes Taylor planned to sell the drugs in the Bangor area.

Charged with aggravated trafficking of heroin, trafficking of cocaine and importation of scheduled drugs, Taylor is being held at Penobscot County Jail.
