Maine golfers finish fourth in New England junior tourney

A team of Maine junior golfers placed fourth at the 54-hole New England Golf Association Junior Championship played at the Country Club of Waterbury (Conn.) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Maine’s team total of 925 was 21 strokes back of team champion Connecticut. Massachusetts was second, just one stroke behind the champions with a 905 team total while New Hampshire finished third, Rhode Island was fifth and Vermont placed sixth.

Bangor’s Jesse Spiers finished third overall in the individual competition with a three-round total of 224 (77-72-75). Kevin Silva of the Country Club of New Bedford (Mass.) was the individual champ with a 216 total and Hisaki Kobayashi of Indian Hill Golf Club (Conn.) was second at 223.

Adam Smith of Kebo Valley in Bar Harbor was second low on the Maine team with a 232 (82-76-74), Blake Eldridge of Springbrook Country Club in Leeds (80-87-74), Colin Reed of Samoset Resort in Rockport (83-75-83) and Chris Woodward of Sanford Country Club (81-76-84) all shot 241. Jeff Bouchard of Hampden shot 83-85-85 for a 253 total.
