A Hancock man faces a host of charges related to a rocky relationship with his former girlfriend that recently took another violent turn.

Travis Battis, 26, already was awaiting trial last week for a felony assault charge against the woman in an incident last June when he broke into two separate apartments in Ellsworth looking for her.

Battis found the woman at one of the apartments, punched her in the head a few times and trashed the residence, Hancock County Assistant District Attorney Mary Kellett said.

Ellsworth police investigated the case and obtained a warrant for new charges of burglary and assault. Battis turned himself in on Tuesday.

The man was not supposed to have contact with the victim, stemming from the June 2006 incident, but he already had violated those conditions in December 2006.

On Dec. 22, the night before a court appearance for the initial charge, Kellett said, Battis went to a residence looking for the woman and assaulted her. Less than a month later, Battis was at it again.

The new charges against Battis still are being sorted out, but Kellett said the man faces multiple felony charges.

Battis and the same woman were involved in a case in September 2004 that resulted in the vicious beating death of the woman’s father.

The woman had been arguing with another boyfriend, Jack Wentworth, when her father stepped in to defuse the situation. Wentworth attacked the man, who suffered fatal injuries.

Battis retaliated in the incident by assaulting Wentworth, Kellett said.

Wentworth eventually pleaded guilty to an aggravated assault charge and served time in prison.

A local man was arrested earlier this week after an investigation that alleged in October of last year that he provided a teenage family member with cocaine.

Scott Firley, 39, of Ellsworth was arrested Sunday on an outstanding warrant charging him with aggravated furnishing of a scheduled drug, a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The aggravating factor, according to Hancock County Assistant District Attorney Mary Kellett was the girl’s age, 14.

Information about the incident was brought to the attention of the Ellsworth Police Department by a concerned witness, Kellett said.

She declined to identify the specific relationship between Firley and the teenager, but Kellett said the girl admitted that Firley provided the drug to her and that she used it.

Firley has been released on bail and likely will appear next month in Hancock County Superior Court, although a date has not been set.
