100-mile sled dog race to start annual Snofest in Greenville

GREENVILLE – Yips and barks will fill the crisp morning air Saturday as the annual 100-mile sled dog race is held in conjunction with the town’s annual Snofest celebration taking place from Feb. 10 through Feb. 25.

Unlike last year at this time, there is plenty of snow and ice for the 24 mushers and their dog teams to make the trek up mountains, over open areas and through the forest from Greenville to Brownville Junction. Racers and their dog teams will rest for two hours in Brownville before resuming the race back to the finish line in Greenville.

Spectators are welcome at vantage points along the trail in Greenville and Brownville. The race will begin at 9 a.m. from the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife parking lot.

As part of the Snofest celebration, the local American Legion Post will sponsor a pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. Sunday at the hall.

The Moosehead Riders Snowmobile Club will sponsor a chili and chowder cook-off at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at the snowmobile clubhouse. On Saturday, Feb. 17, the snowmobile club will sponsor activities including a snowmobile safety check and awards at 9 a.m.; a guided snowmobile tour of the lakes and mountains at 10 a.m.; a cookout on a local pond at noon; guided tours and family activities after lunch; a bonfire in the East Cove of Moosehead Lake at 6 p.m.; and a snowmobile parade from the East to West Cove.

The American Legion will hold a second pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at the hall.

Chocolate sweets will be on tap for the third annual chocolate festival from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Masonic Temple, sponsored by the Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce. This is the sole fundraising event of the Chamber and last year’s raised $4,000, according to Laura Brown, the Chamber’s office manager.

Fifteen samples from cheesecake to candy can be selected by adults for a $10 admission fee. There also will be an event for children 10 and under for a $5 fee.

Snofest will conclude with a family skating party at the municipal ice rink from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25.
