VESTAL, N.Y. – University of Maine senior forward Kevin Reed moved into sixth place on the school’s all-time scoring list Sunday afternoon.

But that was just about the only highlight for the Black Bears as Binghamton received 18 points apiece from junior guards Mike Gordon and Richard Forbes en route to an easy 67-40 America East triumph.

It was Maine’s lowest point total since March 9, 2002 when the Bears were beaten 66-40 by Boston University in the America East championship game.

Binghamton, which had lost five of its last six and eight of its last 10, improved to 11-14 overall, 4-9 in America East. The Bearcats avenged a 69-64 loss on Jan. 13 in Orono.

The Bears fell to 11-14 and 6-7, respectively, while losing for the third time in four games.

Binghamton scored the game’s first six points and, after Maine answered with five straight, the Bearcats scored 10 unanswered points on their way to a 20-4 run that supplied them with a comfortable lead they would never relinquish.

Forbes had 12 of the 20 points including back-to-back three-pointers.

Maine could get no closer than 14 the rest of the way and the lead swelled to as many as 35 in the second half.

Binghamton led 38-17 at halftime.

Forbes had 14 first-half points, Lazar Trifunovic had 10 and Gordon contributed nine more.

Trifunovic finished with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Gordon had a game-high five steals to go with his 18 points.

Forbes had three assists to accompany his 18 points and Giovanni Olomo contributed 10 rebounds.

Binghamton out-rebounded Maine 46-28.

Reed’s 13 points gives him 1,522 for his career at Maine. The Yarmouth, Mass. native and Maine co-captain moved past Jim Stephenson (1,518) into sixth. His next point will tie him with Roger Lapham for fifth place.

Philippe Tchekane Bofia had six points for the Bears and Bruff led them in rebounds with seven.

Binghamton shot 40.7 percent from the floor while Maine shot a dismal 28.9 percent, including a 24 percent shooting performance in the first half compared with Binghamton’s 41.2 percent.

Binghamton had 17 points off turnovers to Maine’s six and had an 11-2 edge in second-chance points.

The Black Bears will return to action on Wednesday night at 8 when they entertain the University of Vermont’s Catamounts.
