Confetti shower remains mystery

BANGOR – A surprise celebratory streamer and confetti shower at center court wasn’t just a surprise to fans at the Bangor Auditorium Saturday afternoon.

As fans, players, coaches and officials alike awaited the start of the national anthem before the Eastern Maine Class B boys quarterfinal between Mattanawcook Academy and Caribou, some kind of non-explosive confetti bomb showered center court and left the floor littered with shiny bits of paper.

No one seemed to know where it came from, whether it was launched from the crowd or had simply fallen from the rafters of the old building.

“I missed all of it. I went into my little press box area above the court on the second floor and happened to see a guy sweeping up,” said tournament director Bill Fletcher. “Someone with the Auditorium staff thought it might have been something that got stuck up in a speaker or something and might have been left over from a concert or something.

“I don’t think it was related to anything in the crowd.”
