Ailing seal rescued, taken to rehab center

SOUTHWEST HARBOR – A sick seal that wandered ashore and into a local road on Wednesday has been taken to a marine animal rehabilitation facility in Westbrook.

The seal was discovered Wednesday night by police on Route 102A in the Seawall area of town. Sensing something might be wrong, police called Allied Whale, an organization at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, to investigate. Allied Whale specializes in the study and conservation of marine mammals such as seals and whales.

Rosemary Seton, a research associate with Allied Whale, said Thursday that she and her colleagues picked up the seal, who they named Hector, around 10 p.m. They delivered Hector, a male between 12 and 14 months old, to the Marine Animal Lifeline clinic on Thursday.

Seton said the seal’s rescuers have not figured out what malady is affecting the seal. She said she is not sure how they settled on the name Hector.

“So far he’s doing fine,” Seton said. “We’ll just wait to see how he fares over the next 48 hours.”
