1Voice for Girl Scouts

Girl Scout volunteers and girls in grades six and above are invited to the winter 1Voice meeting, a format designed to give Girl Scout volunteers and older girl members the information and resources needed for the rest of the Girl Scout year.

The District 6 1Voice meeting will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Hermon High School, 2415 Route 2.

The agenda for the meeting includes a district business meeting for girls in grades eight and above and adult volunteers. Agenda items include a report from the board of directors and up-to-date information on the council realignment process.

Other topics to be covered include plans for spring registration, information on bridging activities and end of the year financial reports.

Information on resident camp and troop and family camping at Camp Natarswi will be available.

Bird photography

Digiscoping, A Contagious Hobby, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Fields Pond Audubon Center. A fee of $6 will benefit the nature center. No registration is required for this program.

Jerry Smith, a birdwatcher and photographer from Orrington, has a hobby called digiscoping. This photography technique uses a spotting scope and digital camera to photograph birds up close and personal.

With a rise in bird watching comes a rise in perfecting photos of these somewhat elusive subjects, Smith said. Although digiscoping is not limited to birds as its subject, nature watching is a vast concept that contains many rousing elements just waiting to be photographed.

Don’t be disheartened by equipment expense, this program is for everyone, digiscopers and non-digiscopers alike, Smith said.

Smith will share an array of photos, excitement about the technique and stories with the audience. There will be plenty of time for Smith to answer questions and meet with fellow enthusiasts.

Class of 1997 reunion

The Old Town High School Class of 1997 will hold its 10-year reunion at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Old Town.

Parish auction

Holy Family Parish will hold its second annual auction on Sunday, March 11, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Gilman Falls Avenue.

Preview of auction items and registration takes place 10-11 a.m. The auction is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Luncheon will be available. Proceeds benefit the parish hall kitchen upgrade. For more information, call 827-5336 or 827-5790.

Tracking field trip

The Penobscot Valley Chapter of Maine Audubon and Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust will co-sponsor a tracking field trip for beginners 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 10, in the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands.

Biologist and teacher Carolyn Bennatti will lead the search for clues about the activities of the wildlife roaming the 4,300-acre Wildlands property in Orland.

If there is snow, bring your snowshoes. Be prepared for a moderate hike. The trip will not be canceled if there is no snow. Meet at the Route 1 entrance to the Wildlands located near the intersection of Routes 1 and 176 in East Orland.
