1 killed, another hurt in Jonesport accident

JONESPORT – One man was killed and another seriously injured Sunday morning after the vehicle they were in slammed into some trees on Route 187.

Joseph J. Bazylak, 25, of Addison was dead at the scene. A second man, James Robinson Jr., 27, also of Addison, was taken by ambulance to Down East Community Hospital in Machias, then transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Hospital officials there said he was in critical condition Sunday afternoon.

Around 3 a.m. the two were traveling south on Route 187 in the Mason’s Bay Area when their vehicle left the road and struck several large hardwood trees.

“According to initial reports, there were subjects trapped inside the vehicle, and [smoke] was coming from the vehicle,” the Washington County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

It took emergency personnel nearly two hours to remove the men.

“[The] investigation also found that speed and alcohol were involved,” the department said.

The Jonesport, Jonesboro and Addison fire and rescue departments and the Moosabec and Pleasant River Ambulance Services assisted sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
