Kitchen gardeners take note: Wood Prairie Farm in Bridgewater is at it again. The family-run organic farm has won the Mailorder Gardening Association’s Green Thumb Award for a potato variety suited for organic growing. Developed by Cornell University and field tested by Wood Prairie Farm’s owners Jim and Megan Gerritsen, the new ‘King Harry’ is resistant to Colorado potato beetles and potato leafhoppers, which dislike the plant’s hairy leaves. ‘King Harry’ is said to yield a heavy crop of bright-skinned tubers with pearly white flesh. Just desserts

If you normally feel guilty about scarfing down chocolate, take heart. Spruce Run Association’s annual gala dessert party and silent auction is a perfect excuse to chow down for a good cause. The event will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Wellman Commons on the former Bangor Theological Seminary campus at 300 Union St. in Bangor. The feast will feature desserts provided by local restaurants and bakers – and if you don’t like chocolate, fruit and vanilla will be well represented. Live jazz and a silent auction round out the evening. Tickets cost $15, and proceeds benefit Spruce Run, which provides services to people who are affected by domestic abuse. Future tense

Interested in sustainable sustenance? Then clear your calendar this Saturday for the second Local & Sustainable Foods Conference. The open house-style event will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at Unity Centre for the Performing Arts in Unity. The conference will feature information tables from groups working on food issues in Maine, local food, speakers, forums and workshops geared toward creating local food solutions.
