Leveille, Soares tabbed for All-Star team

University of Maine linemates Michel Leveille and Josh Soares have been chosen to the New England Hockey Writers Division I men’s all-star team.

Senior center and captain Leveille leads the Frozen Four-bound Black Bears in scoring with 44 points on 19 goals and 25 assists while senior left wing and assistant captain Soares has 43 points on 19 goals and 24 assists.

Soares has nine goals and 11 assists on the power play while Leveille had five goals and 15 assists with the man advantage. Maine’s power play is No. 1 in the country with a 25.7 percent success rate.

Soares also has three shorthanded goals.

They were joined on the team by goalies John Curry of Boston University and Jon Quick of Massachusetts; defensemen Reid Cashman of Quinnipiac, Matt Gilroy and Sean Sullivan of BU, and Dylan Reese of Harvard; and forwards Brian Boyle and Nathan Gerbe of Boston College, David Jones of Dartmouth, and Trevor Smith of New Hampshire.

“That’s a nice surprise. It’s always nice to be recognized for what you’ve done individually, but to be truthful, I’m more worried about winning a [national] championship right now,” said Soares, who was an All-Hockey East second-team selection.

Leveille was also pleased.

“I’ll definitely take that,” said Leveille, who added that he was pleased for his linemate.

“We’ve been together all year long and I have a lot of respect for him. He has worked real hard. He’s a great athlete,” said Leveille, who was a first-team All-Hockey East pick.

Maine coach Tim Whitehead said the honors were “very well-deserved.”

“They’ve been fabulous this year from start to finish,” said Whitehead. “They are such complete players and what was so impressive was they kept getting better and better every year.”

In addition to their offensive numbers, Whitehead said they are both gritty players and they make up his best penalty-killing tandem.
