MACHIAS – One of the three men arrested in connection with a burglary at a salvage yard on Port Road in Machiasport early Wednesday was a part-time corrections officer at the Washington County Jail.

Daniel Balcomb, 18, of Machiasport resigned from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday. The jail is part of the sheriff’s department.

Sheriff Donny Smith said Friday that Maine State Police notified jail administrator Bob Gross on Wednesday night that Balcomb was under investigation.

“He did resign before I could discipline him,” Smith said.

The sheriff said that if Balcomb had not resigned, he would have been suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation.

“If he had been found guilty, we would have terminated,” he said.

“We won’t tolerate that type of behavior,” the sheriff said.

In addition to Balcomb, also arrested were James Corbett, 19, of Machiasport and Andrew Beam, 22, of Cutler. Corbett was charged with felony burglary, the other two with theft. They are expected to appear in court in May.

The three allegedly stole about $400 in tools and equipment from Rasco’s Salvage Yard, spray-painted several vehicles, and damaged windshields on others, Maine State Police Trooper Jason Fowler said Thursday.

During their investigation, police went to Corbett’s residence in Machiasport and questioned him. Corbett admitted his role in the alleged burglary, police said. The police recovered about 60 percent of the stolen property from Corbett’s residence.

Police also arrested Beam, who was at Corbett’s house.

From there, police went to Machias where they talked with Balcomb. Fowler said police recovered some stolen property from Balcomb’s vehicle.

Other charges may be pending in connection with the burglary, the trooper said.
