Country legends to help raise funds for class trip

At the end of May, members of the eighth-grade class at Mountain View School in Sullivan will make their way to New York City for their class trip.

Before that thrilling experience in The Big Apple can come to pass, however, they need assistance in raising money to help cover their expenses, and some very special people have offered to be part of that effort.

You are cordially invited to attend a Maine Country Living Legends Show from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at the school.

Admission is by donation at the door, and the doors open at 12:30 p.m. that day.

The event includes a 50-50 raffle, drawing, a Chinese auction, a bake sale, refreshments and, of course, outstanding entertainment.

With disc jockey Dutch Heiser host for the fundraiser, you will enjoy seeing some of your favorite stars who appeared on the former Curly O’Brien television show such as The Tophands, Jackie King, Doc Morrill and Lefty Dean.

Also appearing will be recording artist and star of the former “Stacey’s Country Jamboree” television show, Jeff Simon and the Mainely Country Band, who will appear with new singer Kayla Wass.

In addition to that memorable lineup, The Higgins Family of Pard, Lisa and Katie will be there, as will singer-songwriter Billy Lydick.

The afternoon’s entertainment also features Yodeling Wade Dow with Kim Bailey; National Endowment for the Arts honoree Fiddling Ralph Stanley, and recording artist, singer and songwriter Danny Harper.

Donations for the event’s raffles and auction are most welcome, and you can obtain information about contributing an item or items, or helping the class in other ways, by calling the school at 422-3200 and asking for either Dawn Doughty or Joan Ingalls.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend “YOM ha-SHOAH: A Holocaust Remembrance,” beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Congregation Beth Israel, 144 York St., Bangor.

Guest speakers for the event are Alex Wilde, Sol Goldman and Eva Weitman, and entertainment will be presented by The Silver Duo of Noreen Silver on the cello and pianist Phillip Silver.

Sponsored by the Jewish Community Council, a reception will follow in the Epstein Room where refreshments will be served and you will have the opportunity to ask questions of the participants.

For information, call Connie Kelsey, 947-7676.

You are invited to a free “Nutrition, Cooking and Disease-Prevention” class from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at the Greater Bangor Seventh-day Adventist Church on Route 2 in Hermon.

Hosted by the church, the class features information provided by health leader Cherilyn Typaldos, and includes many samples, demonstrations and door prizes.

For more information, call Typaldos at 941-1146 or Alexis Jones at 825-3762.

Community members are offering their heartfelt support in a variety of ways to Jessica Thibodeau Messina of Orrington, who has been diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphocytic leukemia, known as PH-positive ALL, a very serious form of the disease.

Frank Messina and his 29-year-old wife are the proud parents of two young boys who attend Center Drive School in Orrington.

A benefit spaghetti supper is planned for the family with two seatings: one from noon to 3 p.m., and the other from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at the school, 17 School St.

The requested donation is $5, $3 for children under 12, $15 for families.

Donations to help the family can be made at any branch of Bangor Federal Credit Union.

If you cannot attend, but want more information about how you can help this young couple through this most difficult time, call the school at 825-3310.

Bill Robertson called to let folks in his area know that the “Seacoast Senior Citizens meet the second Saturday of each month, from April through December, for a potluck lunch and a program.”

The first meeting, therefore, is coming right up and, he added, “anybody 55 and older is more than welcome to join us.”

Seacoast Senior Citizens will meet at noon Saturday, April 14, at Gouldsboro Methodist Church “on the old Route 1 in Gouldsboro,” Robertson said.

Those who plan to attend are asked to bring a dish to share. Utensils and beverages will be provided.

“We usually have a very short business meeting and then the program,” Robertson said.

“If anyone has questions, they can call me at 565-2901.”
