House holds moment of silence for Holman

AUGUSTA – The Maine House held a moment of silence and passed a resolution Tuesday in memory of Rep. Abigail Holman, a first-term lawmaker who was killed in a skiing accident during the weekend.

Gov. John Baldacci has ordered that the U.S. and Maine flags be flown at half-staff from Tuesday until sunset Thursday, the day of Holman’s funeral.

Nearly all legislative activities and meetings have been suspended for Thursday so lawmakers can attend services at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Augusta.

The resolution read in the House said Holman, R-Fayette, was “tireless in her dedication and willingness to serve.” The resolution expressed lawmakers’ sorrow and expressed condolences “to all who share our sorrow.”

The resolution goes to the Senate for final passage, which is expected Wednesday.

Holman represented Fayette, Manchester, Belgrade, Vienna and Mount Vernon.

She served as legal counsel and legislative director for Gov. John McKernan during his administration, and later was executive director of the Maine Forest Products Council. Holman joined the Augusta law firm of Lipman, Katz & McKee in December.

Holman was pronounced dead at the first aid clinic at Sugarloaf USA after an accident in which she struck a tree after completing a run in a fundraising ski event.
