OAKLAND – A Little League stadium in Maine will be a mini Fenway replete with a Green Monster when it opens by summer’s end.

John Blais of A.E. Hodsdon Consulting Engineers said it’s a faithful replica of Fenway on a smaller scale, and without the grandstands.

“The shape and everything is exactly like Fenway Park,” Blais said. “It is a total rendering of Fenway. It is a great, fun project.”

The project, spearheaded by Alfond Youth Center, is more than a year in the making, and the end product will be called Harold Alfond Fenway Park in honor of the well-known Maine philanthropist.

Even Major League Baseball was impressed.

“Something of this size and scope and significance is something I have not seen before,” said Waterville native John Brody, Major League Baseball’s senior vice president of corporate sales and marketing.

Gardiner Savings Bank, with a $100,000 contribution, is the chief donor to the project. The Boston Red Sox Foundation provided $50,000, and the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation chipped in $30,000 to pay for uniforms and equipment.

Hall of Famer Ripken is expected to be in town Sept. 9-10 to participate in the formal dedication of the field.
